In Treatment

An American television drama series (2008 to 2021) structured around weekly psychotherapy sessions and the therapist's own clinical consultation.

Viewing note

This television drama series is a scripted fictional dramatisation. Although its episode structure mirrors weekly appointments, the dialogue, boundary crossings and storylines are written for dramatic tension and are not representative of ordinary psychotherapy practice.

What the work shows

Developed for HBO by Rodrigo García and adapted from the Israeli series BeTipul (created by Hagai Levi, Ori Sivan and Nir Bergman), In Treatment debuted in January 2008. In its first three seasons the series follows psychotherapist Paul Weston (played by Gabriel Byrne) across four weekday episodes, each devoted to a single recurring client or couple, followed by a fifth episode in which Weston meets his own consultant and former supervisor, Gina Toll (played by Dianne Wiest). A fourth season in 2021 centred on a different therapist, Brooke Taylor (played by Uzo Aduba).

Nearly the entire action of each episode takes place in two chairs inside a consulting room.

How closely it reflects practice

Unlike feature films that compress an entire therapy into one breakthrough scene, the multi-episode format allows the series to depict silence, recurring themes, alliance ruptures, transference, countertransference and the use of clinical supervision over weeks.

At the same time, the scripted plots include severe boundary violations, dual relationships and dramatic confrontations that depart from ethical clinical practice. In professional codes on both sides of the Atlantic, romantic or dual entanglement with clients is prohibited. The series has not been viewed in full for this draft; descriptions rely on the Peabody Awards archive and reference records.
